Quick answers

How do I randomly split a list of names into teams?

Paste your names one per line, choose the number of teams (or a fixed team size), and click Generate Teams. The tool shuffles the list with the Fisher–Yates algorithm and deals names out round-robin, so teams end up as even as possible β€” sizes differ by at most one person.

What is the fairest way to split teams?

A random draw is the fairest neutral method: no bias toward friends, favorites, or skill levels. If you also want balanced skill, generate random teams first and then swap one or two people β€” it's faster than drafting by hand, and everyone accepts the result because the starting point was impartial.

How many teams should I make?

As a rule of thumb, aim for 4–6 people per team for discussions and class projects, and full squads for sports. If the headcount doesn't divide evenly, don't worry β€” the generator handles it automatically and keeps teams within one person of each other.

Frequently asked questions

Is this random team generator really free?

Yes. It's free with no limits, no account, and no watermarks. We plan to keep it free supported by advertising.

Are the teams truly random?

Yes. Names are shuffled with the Fisher–Yates algorithm β€” the standard unbiased shuffle β€” then distributed round-robin so the teams are as even as possible.

What happens if the names don't divide evenly?

Teams are filled round-robin, so sizes differ by at most one person. For example, 10 names into 3 teams gives splits of 4, 3, and 3.

Is my list of names uploaded anywhere?

No. The entire tool runs in your browser with JavaScript. Names never leave your device.

Can I use it on my phone?

Absolutely β€” the page is mobile-friendly and works in any modern browser, no app needed.
